Tower Bridge up close!
• Over 50 designs were submitted for the construction of the bridge and opened on 30th June, 1894.
• The Same Architect who Designed Tower Bridge also Designed Many of London’s Famous Markets.
• The two levered sections are called bascules and weigh over 1,100 tons each.
• Tower Bridge was painted red, white and blue in 1977 to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Before that it was a boring brown tone as it had been for decades.
• The bridge was designed to fit in with the neighbouring Tower of London, hence the gothic revival look.
